Awareness is Key

Have you ever found yourself questioning why you feel down or depressed at a time when you can find no valid reason for it? Life appears to be rolling along quite nicely, work is a mission, but it’s a manageable one and the family all seem relatively carefree and content. Still, we feel a low vibe resonating within us, which is enough to flatten us and removes any possibility of truly enjoying our day.

Unchecked emotion can cause this feeling of imbalance, and it can remain with us throughout our day, or worse, over a period of days. The ability to still our thought through controlled breathing and meditation may lead to inner peace and a form of clarity, which helps reveal the catalyst for our unsettled emotion. If not, it will at least have distracted us enough to release us from the thoughts surrounding our discomfort for a short period of time. If we are alert, we realise that if we are capable of achieving this for a short period of time, we can certainly work on extending this peaceful time through practice.

The ability to scan our thoughts and feelings is unique to us as humans and is an extremely valuable tool in helping us to reduce the suffering we experience when we allow our mind to run untethered. Often the pain we feel around issues is caused by our negative thought surrounding such issues. We have a propensity to blow things out of proportion, to create scenarios that are untrue and that naturally will cause stress within us. This generally occurs when we regress to the past or project to the future, both of which don’t exist. By anchoring our thought in the present moment, we are living in real time, which is the greatest (and only) time to deal with issues, or perceived issues.

Take some time to give this a try, test yourself by observing your thoughts to see if they are anchored in the past or future, or are you entrenched in the present. Be guided by your emotional reactions, negative past or future thoughts create discomfort, uneasiness or stress, and there is no way to correct what has occurred in the past, or that is theoretically still to happen. If your present moment situation is problematic, your presence of mind or fight or flight response will assist you to deal with the situation. Here is where you can and will achieve a result. We were not placed on this earth to suffer, that occurs through mindless activity, which can only be averted through a mindful approach to life. Awareness is key.
